International Code Council Announces Updates for the ICC A117.1 Accessibility Consensus Committee
The International Code Council (ICC) is updating how ICC A117.1, Standard for Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities, is maintained to better align with ICC’s established codes and standards development processes and current ANSI Essential Requirements.
Strengthening Processes
By moving to a three-year publishing cycle, supported by a continuous maintenance process, ICC and the ICC A117.1 Consensus Committee will be able to update the standard more regularly and respond more quickly to changes in the built environment, emerging technologies and advancements in accessibility solutions.
To support a more balanced representation of disabilities, industries and perspectives, ICC has also expanded Committee interest categories from five to nine.
These updates allow the Committee to:
- Deliver updates to the standard on a more predictable and timelier basis
- Address needed changes on an ongoing basis rather than waiting for a full development cycle
- Reduce the need for interim updates or supplemental materials
- Improve coordination with the scoping provisions in the International Codes® (I-Codes®)
What’s Next
Current and new committee members will have to re-apply for appointment to the Committee.
ICC remains committed to advancing accessibility and ensuring that ICC A117.1 continues to serve as a trusted, relevant and forward-looking resource for people living with disabilities and for construction and building safety professionals designing spaces that better accommodate everyone.
ICC is releasing a new edition of A117.1 in Fall 2026. The A117.1-2026 will be referenced in the 2027 International Codes® (I-Codes®).
