Giving Back: The International Code Council Presents Donation to Support Engineering Education

The scholarship financially assists UA civil engineering students so they can receive the educational opportunities they deserve.

Driven by a commitment to support the future of building safety, the International Code Council, with help from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), presented a donation to the James M. Delahay Endowed Scholarship at the University of Alabama (UA), College of Engineering.

The scholarship financially assists UA civil engineering students so they can receive the educational opportunities they deserve.

Leaving Behind a Legacy

This scholarship was established in memory of James M. “Jim” Delahay who was the former President and CEO of LBYD and had a significant impact on the civil engineering industry.

As a graduate of UA and a registered professional engineer in 15 states, Delahay held a prominent role on the ASCE Committee 7, which is recognized as the foremost wind engineering group in the United States. He also became one of three practitioners on the 16-person International Building Code Structural Committee and was voted committee chairman –  becoming the first practicing engineer to ever fill that role.

At UA, Delahay actively mentored students and transformed the design course for civil, construction and environmental engineering students. His educational advancements have now been adopted by other firms that support engineering education.

Recognizing the Importance of Engineering Education

UA’s College of Engineering is one of the first five universities to offer engineering education in the United States and currently has around 6,000 students, more than 140 staff members and an annual research expenditure of over $31 million. The programs offered provide students access to leading-edge research and innovative educational experiences to help shape the future of their careers.

With nationally accredited programs and a diverse selection of departments for students to choose from, UA’s College of Engineering has proven to be a strong stepping stone for individuals who wish to enter the building safety industry.

Supporting the Next Generation Through Education

The Code Council is dedicated to providing support to the next generation of building safety professionals. Donating to resources like the James M. Delahay Endowed Scholarship can be a powerful way to help students grow and reach their full potential.

Programs offered through the Code Council’s Safety 2.0 Initiative can also be advantageous resources for emerging building safety professionals. With a wide range of training programs, mentors and leadership opportunities, Safety 2.0 can help better equip individuals entering the industry.
