From Sept. 6-10, 2025, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) hosted the 2025 Innovative Housing Showcase in Washington, D.C., co-sponsored by the International Code Council. This event brought together building safety professionals, manufacturers, builders and policymakers from across the nation to promote solutions addressing the affordable housing crisis.
This year’s theme, The American Home is the American Dream, highlighted history-defining events in housing, the pride of achieving the American Dream of homeownership and the future of housing innovation.
The showcase featured innovative and affordable housing solutions and technologies aimed at expanding the housing supply, cutting construction expenses, enhancing resilience and making homes more affordable for both owners and renters.
International Code Council Participation at the Innovative Housing Showcase
On Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 1:00-1:45 PM ET, a panel discussion titled Breaking Down Regulatory Barriers featured Ryan Colker, Executive Director, Energy, Resilience and Innovation with the Code Council, as a panelist and was moderated by HUD Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary John Gibbs.
During the panel discussion, Colker explained how building codes are essential for the safety and quality of the built environment. He went into detail about how the Code Council is working to modernize codes while supporting new construction methods like modular and 3D printing.
Gibbs highlighted that, “Regulations must evolve with the times. When codes and permitting processes align with innovation, we can deliver more homes, more quickly, and at a price that families can afford.”
All panelists agreed that regular codes and standards updates and uniform application are essential to scaling affordable housing solutions and capturing the innovations on display at the Showcase.
