BCAC Position Statement on G170-15 Public Comment #2
The Building Code Action Committee (BCAC) was the proponent of Code Change G170-15, which was intended to be an editorial reorganization of portions of Chapter 6 of the International Building Code. G170-15 was recommended for disapproval at the Committee Action Hearings and two public comments were submitted for the Public Comment Hearings (PCH). During testimony at the 2015 PCH for G170-15, the BCAC supported Public Comment #2 with the understanding that this comment included no technical changes to the current code provisions. G170-15 was approved as modified by public comment #2 at the PCH. Upon further review, the BCAC discovered an unintentional technical change within this comment that would prohibit the use of fire retardant treated wood (FRTW) in load bearing exterior walls of Type III construction. Under the current code provisions (2015 IBC) FRTW is allowed for use in load bearing exterior walls of Type III construction, therefore the BCAC no longer supports Public Comment #2 to G170-15.
