Mississippi
State AdoptionsMississippi adopts its building codes at the state level through the Mississippi Building Code Council (MBCC). The state has established the Mississippi State Building Code, which is based on the International Codes (I-Codes) published by the International Code Council (ICC), including the International Building Code (IBC), International Residential Code (IRC), and International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). While the MBCC adopts and updates these codes on a three-year cycle, local jurisdictions decide whether to enforce them. However, since the passage of the Mississippi Building Code Act, all coastal counties are required to adopt and enforce the state building code due to hurricane and wind risks. Elsewhere in the state, enforcement is voluntary but encouraged, leading to a mix of adoption levels across counties and municipalities. This structure ensures that high-risk coastal areas maintain strong building standards while allowing flexibility for inland regions. Links to State Adoption Agencies |
