Code Expert Returns to ICC Team to Support Seismic Safety, Structural Resiliency

Dowty has practical experience in code compliance, development and administration to assist ICC members, clients and chapters

Susan M. Dowty, P.E., S.E., returns to ICC team to support seismic safety and structural resiliency

Susan M. Dowty, P.E., S.E., brings more than 25 years of experience in the administration, development and interpretation of building code provisions to her new position with the International Code Council. Working in the Government Relations Division as a Regional Manager, she will provide support to ICC members, clients, chapters and agencies. She is a previous California Building Standards Commission member and a former staff engineer for the Code Council’s legacy organization in California.

“Susan’s vast knowledge and experience will be a key resource, especially helpful in the Code Council’s work on seismic safety, resiliency, and for California communities that are implementing seismic retrofit programs where speed and cost are critical to success,” said ICC Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO. “We are very excited to have her return to our team.”

A registered Civil and Structural Engineer in the state of California, Dowty has spent the past 15 years working with S.K. Ghosh Associates, a seismic and building code consulting firm. Over the course of her career, she played an active role in the development of structural provisions for the International Building Code, where she served as the Structural Committee Secretariat. She also has been involved in the development and delivery of training programs for code officials on structural provisions in building codes.

Dowty was instrumental in developing a number of structural engineering publications. She served as the consultant for the reformat of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ ASCE 7-05 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures. She was appointed by the Governor to the California Building Standards Commission in 2006 and served until 2010. She is a member of the Structural Engineers Association of California and previously served on its board of directors.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and a master’s degree in structural engineering from California State University, Long Beach.
