Professional Qualifications for Hydrogen Systems in the Built Environment

The Code Council and Center for Hydrogen Safety have opened a new project to develop Guide 8, Professional Qualifications for Hydrogen Systems in the Built Environment. This new guide will establish minimum qualification requirements for professionals involved with hydrogen systems in the built environment. The guide is intended to align with candidate and existing ANSI standards and cover all aspects of hydrogen production and distribution systems within buildings, including piping, appliances, equipment, and components, for heating and energy purposes. When completed, the guide will provide qualification requirements for the following professions:

Design Professionals and Engineers
Plans Examiners
Installers
Inspectors
Auditors
Maintenance Personnel
Trainers/Instructors

The first quarter 2026 public meetings of the committee are scheduled for January 8, January 22, February 5, February 19, March 5 and March 19, from 2:30-4:00 PM eastern and will take place virtually via TEAMS.

What is the background for need?

The hydrogen industry is poised for substantial growth, with global investments expected to exceed $500 billion by the early 2030s. However, the current workforce lacks the necessary skills and qualifications to meet this demand. Existing codes and standards do not sufficiently address the specific qualifications required for professionals working with hydrogen systems, leading to reliance on alternative methods, increased costs, and project delays.

Although hydrogen has a long history of use, its role as a fuel within the built environment is relatively new, necessitating the development of a skilled workforce to ensure safe and efficient implementation. This new guide aims to fill this gap by providing targeted training and certification for professionals across various roles, ensuring they possess the knowledge and skills needed to meet industry standards.

ICC Guides are developed to address a building industry need in an expedited manner and to be used as a basis for a potential national standard. Participating in guide committees will help to shape safe, affordable and sustainable communities and buildings worldwide.
