Webinar: Tsunami Design per ASCE 7-16
October 13, 2024 @ 2:37 pm
The 2016 edition of ASCE 7, Minimum Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures, contains a brand new Chapter 6 on Tsunami Loads and Effects. This new chapter applies to the tsunami design of all Risk Category III and IV buildings, and potentially many taller Risk Category II buildings, in coastal communities in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii. These provisions can also be applied to other communities exposed to tsunami hazard, including Guam, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and communities outside the US.
Because tsunami design will be new to virtually all architects, structural, geotechnical and civil engineers, and building officials, this webinar is designed to give an overview of the new provisions and demonstrate their application to prototypical coastal buildings. The first 50 minute session of the webinar will provide background to the development of the tsunami design provisions. It will also cover the scope of applicability and the methodology for development of the 2500-year return period tsunami hazard maps and flow parameters for design purposes. The newly developed ASCE 7-16 Geodatabase that provides online access to all tsunami-related databases will be demonstrated. The second 40 minute session will cover the hydrostatic, hydrodynamic and debris impact loading expressions and demonstrate their use through example applications. The third 40 minute session will present a complete tsunami design example of a prototypical coastal building in Seaside, Oregon. There will be time after each session to ask questions.
