ICC 825 Private Sewage Disposal Systems Standard

The Code Council has opened a new standards project to develop ICC 825, Private Sewage Disposal Systems. This new standard will provide minimum requirements for designing, constructing, operating and maintaining private sewage disposal systems which include septic tank and effluent absorption systems, or other treatment tank and effluent disposal systems, where a public sewer is not available. Furthermore, the new standard will focus on the impacts of climate change, and how better to design and install such systems to be more resilient to extreme weather events.

This committee will take a global approach to develop minimum requirements and standards to safeguard the health, safety, general welfare of the public and address societal and industry challenges through designing, constructing, operating and maintaining private sewage disposals systems.

The Private Sewage Disposal Systems Standard Consensus Committee (IS-PSDS) committee, including stakeholders from the international community, was appointed by the Code Council Board of Directors in January 2023 in response to a call for committee which the code council posted in August 2022.

ICC 825 will address situations where, if a public sewer is not available, the code requires a private sewage disposal system to be installed. Furthermore, ICC 825 will work hand-in-hand with the sanitary drainage aspect of ICC 815 Standard for Sizing Water Distribution, Sanitary Drainage and Vent Piping Systems.

ICC Standards are developed to address building industry challenges as they relate to compliance with the I-Codes. Participating in these committees will help shape these standards used to ensure safe, affordable and sustainable communities and buildings worldwide.

The Code Council adheres to openness and transparency in our standards development process.  All ICC Standards committee meetings are open to the public.  Any interested party can participate in committee meetings and can be considered by the committee for membership on any work-group that the committee creates. Interested parties will be notified by email of standards activities related to Private Sewage Disposal Systems, including committee meetings, sub-group meetings and the availability of standard development documentation. If you wish to be placed on the “interested parties” list for the development of this standard, contact the ICC IS-PSDS Secretariat, Ramiro Mata rmata@iccsafe.org
