About Code Council Examinations

National/Jurisdiction Certifications

The Code Council certification program is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious credentialing program for construction code administration and enforcement professionals in the United States. Code Council certification examinations are maintained to the highest standards and include continuous review by committees of experienced professionals.

Becoming Code Council-certified is a significant personal and professional accomplishment, and is a key step toward enhanced professional stature. Code Council certificate holders demonstrate a confirmed commitment to protect the public health, safety, and welfare.

Many building departments and state agencies that regulate code enforcement personnel recognize Code Council certification. However, the Code Council cannot guarantee that a specific governmental agency will accept or recognize a Code Council certification. You should first contact the applicable agency regarding specific licensing and employment requirements.

Contractor/Trades Examinations

The International Code Council’s Contractor/Trades examination program is an independent testing program designed to provide licensing agencies with information regarding qualified contractors and trades professionals. Participating in the Code Council examination program does not guarantee that a licensing agency will award you a license. However, the Code Council examination program serves as an independent appraisal of your competency in the construction field, and your test results may be used by licensing agencies to satisfy the requirements for testing.

UST/AST Certifications

Petroleum storage tanks are regulated by federal and state laws. Many states require that tank workers be licensed or certified before being allowed to install, retrofit or decommission UST and/or AST systems or components.

Code Council UST/AST examinations can be used to complement state licensing programs. In some states, individuals are required to pass state-specific examinations.

It is available as a voluntary credential in several other states where there is not yet a mandatory UST or AST licensing requirement. Anyone seeking a state or local license should first contact the appropriate licensing agency regarding specific local requirements.
