ICC 500 ICC/NSSA Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters

The 2023 final draft for the ICC 500 was out for review and comment.  Deadline for the comments were Monday, Nov.13, 2023.  The draft of the revisions, the draft of the standardcommittee action report for the ballot and public comments are posted in the Second Draft Development for the Public Input Agenda.  There was a recirculation of Proposal 03-01-23.  The ballot for the recirculation and final draft of the standard are posted in the Second Draft Development for the Public Input Agenda.

The 2023 draft of the ICC 500 was out for review and comment.  Deadline for the comments was Monday, August 21, 2023.  The draft , committee action report  and comments on the 1st draft are posted in the First Draft Development for the Public Input Agenda.

The ICC 500 committee will be meeting to review comments to the first draft during meeting on Sept. 22, Oct. 3, Oct. 11 and Oct. 24, 20023.  For additional information see the Meeting Notice.

This committee is on continuous maintenance. The ICC 500 committee roster has 15 members. Work Groups for each chapter are meeting to develop proposals. If you would like to be part of any of the work groups, please contact Kimberly Paarlberg, the IS-STM secretariat

The ICC adheres to openness and transparency in our Standards development process. All ICC Standards committee meetings are open to the public. Any interested party can participate in committee meetings and can be considered by the committee for membership on any work-group that the committee creates. Interested parties will be notified by email of standards activities related to IS-STM including committee meetings, sub-group meetings and the availability of standard development documentation. If you wish to be placed on the “interested parties” list for the development of this standard, contact the ICC Secretariat.

Two presentations were provided for the ICC 500 committee members and interested parties.

ICC 500 and ICC 500-2020 Standard and Commentary – Now Available

The 2020 edition of the ICC 500 entitled ICC/NSSA Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters and the ICC 500-2020 Standard and Commentary is now available for purchase at the ICC store. The standard can be viewed for free here.

The 2020 edition was Approved by ANSI as an American National Standard on November 2, 2020. The Code Council appreciates the effort and commitment that the committee put forth to develop the 2020 edition.

The editions of this standard are 2008, 2014 and 2020. There is a commentary available for the 2014 and 2020 editions.

Consensus Committee on Storm Shelters

The primary responsibility of this committee is for minimum requirements to safeguard the public health, safety and general welfare through the design, construction and installation requirement for storm shelters. For more information on the ICC procedures for developing standards, please refer to the ICC Consensus Procedures.

The committee has elected to place ICC 500 under continuous maintenance in order to keep the standard up to date with changing developments in the field. Under a continuous maintenance schedule, the consensus body considers recommended changes to any part of the document. The Code Council accepts public comments and proposals for this Standard on a continual basis and during regular calls for comment. Comments and proposals submitted on ICC Public Comment and Proposal Forms may be submitted to the committee secretariat at kpaarlberg@iccsafe.org.
