The International Code Council and Accessibility Standards Canada Collaborate to Increase Building Accessibility

Washington, D.C. – Today, the International Code Council and Accessibility Standards Canada celebrated an agreement that will facilitate the sharing of best practices related to building accessibility. This collaboration aims to improve and coordinate accessibility requirements in building codes and standards between Canada and the United States.

The agreement between the Code Council and Accessibility Standards Canada officially took effect on February 21, 2022. The agreement will allow Accessibility Standards Canada to reference the Code Council’s ICC A117. 1-2017 Standard for Accessible and Usable Building and Facilities and provide the Code Council with access to Accessibility Standards Canada’s model standard for the built environment.

“I am proud of our collaboration with the Code Council. I look forward to what we will achieve together to benefit our respective countries. Our hope is that the standards we create will become regulation in Canada. By collaborating with a proven standard organization, we are developing world-class standards and increasing the odds that they are adopted nationally, and internationally,” said Philip Rizcallah, CEO, Accessibility Standards Canada.

Accessibility Standards Canada plans to create new standards that better address the barriers faced by all Canadians by reviewing existing international standards, such as those developed by the Code Council.

“Building international relationships and connections is a high priority for the Code Council, and it is essential that the global building community continues to find innovative ways to work together to improve building safety and accessibility,” said Code Council Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO. “It is encouraging to see the passion that Accessibility Standards Canada has dedicated to creating an accessibility standard that will improve the lives of Canadians, and we look forward to the ideas and innovations our collaboration will add to the building community.”

Building Safety Month Week Three Helps Prepare Communities and Individuals for Disasters

Washington, D.C. – The International Code Council’s 42nd annual Building Safety Month campaign continues with week three, focused on the four phases of emergency management. Throughout this week, the Code Council and its members and partners will emphasize the importance of disaster preparedness and share key resources to help individuals increase the safety and resiliency of their communities before, during and after a natural or manmade disaster.

Week three will include a free educational webinar, “FEMA’s New Building Code Strategy and Hazard Mitigation Programs that Support Community Resilience”, on May 17 from 2–3 PM ET. The discussion will explore FEMA’s plans to integrate building codes and standards across its agency and strengthen nationwide building code capability to reduce future damage and save lives. It will also provide a first look at the new Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Building Code Strategy. You can register for the webinar here.

“The forecast for the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, starting in June, predicts that there will be above-normal activity, which means now is the time to make sure you, your family and your friends are prepared,” said Code Council Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO. “One of the best ways to prepare for a disaster is to be sure your community is built to the most up-to-date, modern building codes and standards. We cannot stop natural disasters from happening, but we hope the resources and information we continue to make available to the public can help ensure communities stay informed on how to best prepare for them.”

There is still time to register for the two remaining free virtual events that will take place next week focused on creating a safe and abundant water supply. Register for these events on the Building Safety Month events page.
