Contractor Training – Registered Apprenticeship

US Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship

ICC Training is in the process of adding all of the core construction trades to our original plumbing apprenticeship program, after which we will pursue national status for our program. Once final approval is obtained our national registered apprenticeship program will include the following trades:

  • Plumbing
  • Sheet Metal
  • Electrical
  • HVAC
  • Carpentry
  • Brick Masonry
  • Welding

Our program will utilize a unique hybrid model that includes self-study reading, online videos, hands on practice, and supervised experience to engage every possible learning style while incorporate flexibility and pursuing the end goal of competency in every topic. The program components include:

  • Reading each module at your pace, on your schedule, wherever you are using the NCCER national curriculum for each craft
  • Online video instruction to emphasize key concepts, answer questions, and apply the material to everyday practice (phased in over time featuring subject matter experts from each craft)
  • Brief online quizzes covering the material of each module (retaken if necessary to ensure understanding)
  • Hands-on tasks related to each module signed off by a licensed/experienced trade professional, demonstrating competency that can be applied in the field
  • Employer supervised experience throughout the program, documented quarterly
  • Access to ICC subject matter experts if you experience any challenges with a topic (via email, calls, or live if necessary)

Contractor Training – Medical Gas Maintenance

Medical Gas Maintenance

ICC uses Medical Gas Systems Instructors certified to ASSE 6050, nationally accredited to lead each of the following courses which are scheduled as requested with pricing based on class size and location.

These courses address the NFPA 99 requirements highlighted here:

5.1.14.4.2.5

  1.  “Persons maintaining these [Medical Gas and Vacuum] systems shall be qualified to perform these [maintenance] operations.”
  2.  “Appropriate qualification shall be demonstrated by any of the following:
  1.  A documented training program acceptable to the health care facility by which such persons are employed or contracted to work with specific equipment as installed in that facility.
  2.  Credentialing to the requirements of ASSE 6040, Professional Qualification Standard for Medical Gas Maintenance Personnel, and technically competent on the specific equipment as installed in the facility.”

According to the Joint Commission:

The Joint Commission standards do not specify the type of training or certifications that staff are required to have for maintenance of medical gas systems. If there is a local or state authority that addresses the issue, then compliance with that authority is required…Staff competency may be evaluated at any point during the survey, but may be primarily occur during review of utility systems and their maintenance records. If issues are found [in] the maintenance of the medical gas system, the surveyor may discuss staff training and competency and the organization should be prepared to defend their strategy.

24 Hour Private Medical Gas Maintenance Course

This course is designed to meet the requirements of NFPA 99 for anyone performing maintenance on Medical Gas Systems in a facility. “Maintenance” would include repairing leaking Med Gas outlets/inlets, repairing Med Gas alarm panels, repairing Med Gas valves, performing maintenance on Med Gas manifolds, performing maintenance on Medical Vacuum pumps (oil changes, etc), performing maintenance on Medical Air compressors, etc.

Note: Maintenance DOES NOT include installing, cutting into, repairing, replacing, and/or brazing Med Gas piping. Those activities require INSTALLER licensing per your individual State and/or Local Authority.

This course is held at the Requesting Facility’s location for that facility’s personnel. This is a facility level, not a national, course.

At the conclusion of the course, ICC will conduct an exam to test comprehension of materials covered (at no additional cost). Upon a passing grade, the student will receive an ICC Medical Gas Maintenance Personnel completion certificate valid for 3 years. A 4 hour refresher course is required every 3 years to renew this certificate.

32 Hour Private Medical Gas Maintenance Course

​This course is designed to meet the requirements of NFPA 99 for anyone performing maintenance on Medical Gas Systems in a facility. “Maintenance” would include repairing leaking Med Gas outlets/inlets, repairing Med Gas alarm panels, repairing Med Gas valves, performing maintenance on Med Gas manifolds, performing maintenance on Medical Vacuum pumps (oil changes, etc), performing maintenance on Medical Air compressors, etc.

Week Five: Going Into Overtime, explains the importance of keeping up with new building safety trends and technologies when it comes to building safety. A self-certification program is an important tool to rebuild neighborhoods quickly and safely. This self-certification process allows a licensed architect in the State of California to assume responsibility to verify compliance with the building and zoning codes applicable to construction projects on private property in the City of Los Angeles.

Participant Requirements

  1. Possess a valid architect's license issued by the State of California.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the applicable California Residential Code as required by the Los Angeles Department of Building Safety (LADBS) by successfully completing the test offered by ICC.
  3. Possess professional liability insurance in an amount to be determined by LADBS in its implementation guidelines.
  4. Agree to being removed from the program at the discretion of LADBS if the architect has made material errors in compliance with the required California Residential Code, as amended by the City of Los Angeles and as set forth in LADBS' implementation guidelines. Participants shall remain subject to inspections and code enforcement activities.

Certification

The California self-certification exam is administered through ICC's proctored remote online testing option (PRONTO). Through PRONTO, you can take your exam at your convenience on your home or office computer through a cloud-based testing system, offering secured online proctored exams. You will need a webcam and computer with working audio quality. The 50-question exam is open book and should take approximately 2.5 hours to complete. It is based on the 2022 California Residential Code. Learn more about the exam requirements <here>.

The International Code Council offers several certification opportunities to support career development.

Becoming Code Council-certified is a significant personal and professional accomplishment and a key step toward enhanced professional stature. Code Council certificate holders demonstrate a commitment to protecting public health, safety, and welfare.

While many building departments and state agencies recognize Code Council certification, we recommend contacting the applicable agency regarding specific licensing and employment requirements.

Contractor Training – Medical Gas ASSE

Medical Gas (ASSE)

Our courses provide the required training for anyone pursuing the various Medical Gas (ASSE) certifications required by NFPA 99. This includes all the ASSE 6000 Series categories listed below as well as ASSE Renewals/Recertification and Facility Specific Maintenance Personnel training.

Our Instructors are certified to ASSE 6050, nationally accredited to lead each of the courses listed below. Currently scheduled courses are listed at the bottom of the page after a detailed description of each unique accreditation (click to expand each one).

ASSE 6000 Renewals

ICC Contractor Training offers the 4 hr refresher course required before renewing an ASSE 6005, 6010, 6020, 6030, 6040, or 6050 certification. After completion of this course, a certificate will be issued allowing you to apply for the renewal exam thru NITC (National Inspection, Testing, and Certification) at an additional expense. This course can be completed two ways:

  • Online with our new self-paced program
  • Online Live, face-to-face course at your facility

ASSE 6005 Medical Gas Basics (Generalist/Specialist)

​This class is conducted by an ASSE 6050 Medical Gas Instructor, intended for any person with an interest in medical gas and vacuum systems and equipment, and meets the requirements of completing twenty-four (24) hours of training covering basic facets of piped medical gas and medical-surgical vacuum systems. NFPA 99 and ASSE 6005 documents are provided and used in this course to provide general knowledge of medical gas and vacuum systems.

For National Accreditation: After completion of this course, a separate exam must be scheduled (at an additional cost) at a testing location near you, or conducted by a National Inspection, Testing, and Certification Corporation (NITC) Proctor at your location, then graded by NITC. Upon a passing grade, the student would receive a National ASSE 6005 Medical Gas Generalist accreditation.

Refer to this Candidate Bulletin for ADDITIONAL EXAM PRICING and student qualification requirements, and to this Medical Gas Generalist exam application.

If a National accreditation is not needed, the NITC exam (and associated additional costs) would not be required. An ICC Medical Gas Generalist certificate would be issued instead, at no additional cost.

Note: This certification does not qualify a person to install, maintain, repair, verify, inspect, or replace Med Gas systems. Additional certifications/licenses are required for those activities.

ASSE 6010 Medical Gas Installer

This course is conducted by an ASSE 6050 accredited Medical Gas Instructor, and designed to meet the requirements of NFPA 99 for anyone installing Medical Gas Systems nationwide, by providing thirty two (32) hours of training in the installation of Medical Gas and Vacuum systems. NFPA 99 and ASSE 6010 documents are provided and used in this course.

This certification is good in any US state recognizing ASSE 6010.

MANY STATES DO NOT RECOGNIZE THIS CERTIFICATION, AND MAY REQUIRE STATE SPECIFIC TRAINING AND/OR LICENSING. CHECK WITH YOUR AUTHORITY HAVING JURISDICTION FOR ACCEPTANCE OF THIS CERTIFICATION TO INSTALL MEDICAL GAS SYSTEMS.

NOTE: Installation DOES NOT include Med Gas Maintenance, Inspection, or Verification. Those activities require separate licensing per National, State, and/or Local Authority.

After completion of this course, the student may either:

  1. schedule a written test through National Inspection, Testing, and Certification (NITC) at a testing location of their choice (at an additional cost),
    then perform a separate practical brazing test at their company site (and send test coupon to NITC), OR
  2. schedule a separate written exam conducted by an NITC Proctor at your location, then send in a braze test coupon, then both are graded by NITC (at an additional cost). Upon passing grades, the student would receive a National ASSE 6010 Medical Gas Installer and ASME IX Brazer accreditation.

ASSE 6020 Medical Gas Inspector

​This course is conducted by an ASSE 6050 Medical Gas Instructor, and designed to meet the requirements of NFPA 99 for anyone performing Inspections on Medical Gas Systems nationwide, by providing twenty four (24) hours of training covering all facets of piped medical gas and medical-surgical vacuum systems. NFPA 99 and ASSE 6020 documents are provided and used in this course to review knowledge needed for the proper Inspection of medical gas and vacuum systems.

​Note: Inspection DOES NOT include– installing, cutting into, repairing, replacing, Verifying, and/or brazing Med Gas piping. Those activities require specific licensing per your individual State and/or Local Authority. Your local Authorities may also have separate requirements for Inspecting medical gas systems. Check with your Authorities.

​To complete this National accreditation, this course would be followed by scheduling a separate exam (at an additional cost), at a testing location near you, or conducted by a National Inspection, Testing, and Certification Corporation (NITC) Proctor (at an additional cost) at your location, then graded by NITC. Upon a passing grade, the student would receive a National ASSE 6020 Medical Gas Inspector accreditation.

​A person must have adequate training in the Medical Gas Inspection business before applying for this exam. Refer to this Candidate Bulletin for ADDITIONAL EXAM PRICING and student qualification requirements, and to this Medical Gas Inspector exam application.

ASSE 6030 Medical Gas Verifier

​This course is conducted by an ASSE 6050 accredited Medical Gas Instructor, and designed to meet the requirements of NFPA 99 for anyone performing Verifications on Medical Gas Systems nationwide, by providing at least thirty two (32) hours of training covering all facets of piped medical gas and medical-surgical vacuum systems. NFPA 99 and ASSE 6030 documents are provided and used in this course to REVIEW knowledge needed for the proper Verification of medical gas and vacuum systems.

​Note: Verification DOES NOT include- installing, cutting into, repairing, replacing, and/or brazing Med Gas piping. Those activities require INSTALLER licensing per your individual State and/or Local Authority.

​To complete this National accreditation, this course would be followed by scheduling a separate exam (at an additional cost) conducted by a National Inspection, Testing, and Certification Corporation (NITC) Proctor, then graded by NITC. Upon a passing grade, the student would receive a National ASSE 6030 Medical Gas Verifier accreditation.

​A person must have adequate training in the Medical Gas Verification business before applying for this course and exam. Refer to this Candidate Bulletin for ADDITIONAL EXAM PRICING and student qualification requirements, and this Medical Gas Verifier exam application.

​Please note: Verification of medical gas and vacuum pipeline systems is literally a matter of life and death! Do not apply for this certification unless you possess the necessary SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, and INSURANCE that will allow you to verify medical gas/medical surgical vacuum systems to the highest level.

ASSE 6040 Medical Gas Maintenance

​​This course is conducted by an ASSE 6050 accredited Medical Gas Instructor, and designed to meet the requirements of NFPA 99 for anyone performing maintenance on Medical Gas Systems nationwide. NFPA 99 and ASSE 6040 documents are provided and used during this course. “Maintenance” would include: repairing leaking Med Gas outlets/inlets, repairing Med Gas alarm panels, repairing Med Gas valves, performing maintenance on Med Gas manifolds, performing maintenance on Medical Vacuum pumps (oil changes, etc), performing maintenance on Medical Air compressors, etc., as well as conducting periodic tests and inspections of all the above.

​​NOTE: Maintenance DOES NOT include: installing, cutting into, repairing, replacing, and/or brazing Med Gas piping. Those activities require specific licensing per your individual State and/or Local Authorities.

​​After completion of this 24 hour course the student would need to schedule a separate exam (at an additional cost) at a testing location near you, or conducted by a National Inspection, Testing, and Certification Corporation (NITC) Proctor at your location (at an additional cost), then graded by NITC. Upon a passing grade, the student would receive a National ASSE 6040 Medical Gas Maintenance Personnel accreditation.

Facility Specific Maintenance Personnel Course

​​This course provides a “Documented Training Program acceptable to the health care facility by which such [maintenance] persons are employed to work with specific equipment as installed in that facility”, per NFPA 99 (section 5.1.14). You provide a list of equipment at your facility, we will custom build a course based on that equipment, then hold a class at your facility. We offer this course in 3 and 4 day versions. Contractor Training – Medical Gas Installer – MGIFL

Medical Gas Installer (Florida, 32 Hours)

This 32 Hour Medical Gas Installer Course fulfills the requirements of Florida Administrative Code 61G4-15.031 Medical Gas.

Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board Approved Provider (0991) and Courses (In Person 0614395, Online 0614394).

Course Classroom and Practical Work Texts

Specifically, the course consists of both classroom and practical work designed to teach familiarity with:

  • National Fire Protection Association, NFPA 99 Healthcare Facilities Code, latest edition adopted by the Florida State Fire Marshal, and
  • American Society of Sanitary Engineers, ASSE Series 6000, Professional Qualifications Standards for Medical Gas Systems Installers, Inspectors and Verifiers, latest edition to augment those issues addressed by NFPA 99 relative to medical gas systems and designed to teach the subject matter required by Section 489.1136(1)(a), F.S.

Successful Completion and Renewal Details

Upon successful completion, each participant is issued a completion certificate and digital card as evidence of Florida’s required Medical Gas Installation training which is subject to two expirations:

  • 3 Year Training Expiration: This must be renewed every 3 years via a one day NFPA update course.
  • 6 Month Brazing Expiration: Per NFPA 99, Section 5.1.10.11.11.7, “Performance qualifications of brazers shall remain in effect indefinitely, unless the brazer does not braze with the qualified procedure for a period exceeding 6 months.” Failure to braze (and document brazing) in a 6 month period will require the individual to renew his/her brazing qualification via a brazing test. Contractor Training – PCEAL

Continuing Education for Alabama Plumbers & Gas Fitters

We are proud to be the first approved provider of Alabama continuing education as well as honored to serve the plumbing & pipe fitting professionals of this great state beginning in 2025.

Full Details – Alabama Plumbers & Gas Fitters Examining Board

Alabama’s Plumbers & Gas Fitters Examining Board adopted Continuing Education requirements that must be completed prior to November 1, 2025 in order to renew your certification for 2026 (and every subsequent year). The requirement for continuing education applies to all individuals who hold certification(s) as a Journeyman Plumber, Journeyman Gas Fitter, Master Plumber, or Master Gas Fitter. Individuals must acquire 4 hours of Continuing Education to renew their certification(s), regardless of the number of certifications held. Individuals who hold both plumbing and gas certifications must acquire 2 hours of plumbing and 2 hours of gas CE.

Alabama licensees only need to attend the 4 credit hours specific to their license (plumbing, gas fitting, or both):

8:00 am – 12:30 am – if Plumbing License Only
10:30 am – 03:45 pm – if Gas Fitting License Only
09:15 am – 02:30 pm – if Both Licenses held
08:00 am – 03:45 pm – If ICC Certified (for CEUs)*

Contractor Training – NCCER

NCCER Certification

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) requires Texas high school students enrolled in various Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs to receive industry-based certifications as a significant component of the state’s school accountability program.

The TEA Architecture & Construction Career Cluster includes:

  • Carpentry
  • Construction Technology
  • Core Curriculum
  • Electrical
  • HVAC
  • Industrial Maintenance
  • Instrumentation
  • Masonry
  • Milwright
  • Painting
  • Pipefitting
  • Plumbing
  • Sheet Metal
  • Weatherization
  • Welding

For each of these programs, the required industry certification is from NCCER (National Center for Construction Education & Research). In order for Texas schools to provide the required NCCER certification, they must be partnered with an NCCER Accredited Training Sponsor (ATS). ICC is an active Accredited Training Sponsor, serving high schools across the state in their delivery of any NCCER craft curriculum. Here’s an overview of the process:

  1. ICC and the local school sign a summary Memorandum of Understanding.
  2. Instructors complete two days of NCCER training through ICC (unless already certified).
  3. ICC performs an initial site visit and completes registration of the training location.
  4. Students are enrolled in the related courses and ICC registers them with NCCER.
  5. The school orders selected craft textbooks (or e-books) through their Pearson publishing account.
  6. The school’s instructors complete the training modules at their selected pace and schedule.
  7. Student’s complete online module exams proctored by their (certified) instructor.
  8. Instructor’s report completion of each module’s hands-on components (with copies to ICC).
  9. ICC completes one on-site visit to observe the program each year.
  10. Student’s receive NCCER certification for the craft levels they have completed.

We believe strongly in the value of trade education and want to see many young people leave high school on the path to a well-paying, high demand job. ICC also operates apprenticeship programs registered by the US Department of Labor and students completing programs we sponsor in high school may be eligible for advanced placement based on their previous course work. In addition, Matthew Winn is a member of the TEA Architecture & Construction Advisory Committee which reviews the requirements and implementation of trades education in Texas schools.
