The 2022 Building Safety Month Celebration Begins

Washington, D.C. – The International Code Council is excited to announce the beginning of the 42nd annual Building Safety Month. The campaign is led by the Code Council and its members and partners every May to raise awareness about the importance of building codes and the role of building safety professionals in ensuring our communities remain safe, sustainable and resilient. This year’s Building Safety Month theme is “Safety for All: Building Codes in Action.”

Week one of the campaign highlights how building science, innovation and energy efficiency are leveraged to create safe and sustainable construction within our communities. Week one also explores how energy codes and standards are an essential component to increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The first of four free, educational webinars will take place on May 3 from 3 – 4 pm ET. “Tiny Homes: How Thinking Small Might Help Solve Housing Affordability” will explore how new housing types, like tiny homes, are helping meet the need for affordable housing and what prospective homeowners and policymakers should look for to ensure they are safe and sustainable. You can register for the webinar here.

Each subsequent week of Building Safety Month will focus on a specific theme that is critical to building safety including “Exploring Careers in Building Safety” (week two), “Understanding the Four Phases of Emergency Management”(week three) and “Creating a Safe and Abundant Water Supply” (week four). Throughout the month-long campaign, a series of free virtual events will take place including:

  • Building Your Future: Career Paths for Military Veterans, May 10, 2-3 pm ET: This webinar will uncover the challenges, opportunities and resources available for military veterans considering a career in building safety.
  • Facebook Live, May 10, 1 pm ET: The Facebook Live event will feature Matthew Winn, the Code Council’s Senior Vice President of Training and Education, exploring careers in building safety and the importance of training and education for building safety professionals.
  • Backflow Basics: Repair, Testing and Maintenance, May 24, 2-3:30 pm ET: This roundtable discussion and Q&A webinar will highlight repair, testing, maintenance and inspections methods and assemblies used to protect potable water.
  • Pool Owner Safety 101, May 25, 2-3 pm ET: This webinar, co-sponsored by the Code Council and the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance, is a must for new pool owners or those considering a swimming pool to ensure that pools are both safe and enjoyable for many years to come.

Solar Automated Permit Processing Platform Adheres to the International Code Council’s I-Codes

Washington, D.C. – The International Code Council has determined that the Solar Automated Permit Processing Platform (SolarAPP+) aligns with the 2018 International Building Code (IBC) and the 2018 International Residential Code (IRC) for one and two-family residential dwelling rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) and solar PV connected battery and storage systems. This determination comes as part of the Code Council’s continued collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to improve the utility of SolarAPP+ for local governments that use the model codes developed by the Code Council.

“NREL and the SolarAPP+ coalition are immensely grateful for the Code Council’s commitment to our mission of delivering more efficient online solar and solar and storage permitting,” said Jeff Cook SolarAPP+ Program Lead, NREL. “This announcement is exciting, though not unexpected, given we have been collaborating with the Code Council on SolarAPP+ since its inception.”

The Code Council provided key technical resources to conduct an extensive review of SolarAPP+ and the underlying specification documents to ensure they accurately capture requirements within the International Codes (I-Codes). The technical review considered the requirements of the 2018 I-Codes for solar photovoltaics and battery storage.

“The Code Council’s ensuring that SolarAPP+ aligns with the 2018 IBC and 2018 IRC will help increase the adoption of code-compliant solar energy solutions in communities worldwide,” said Joan O’Neil, Code Council Chief Knowledge Officer. “We look forward to our continued work with the SolarAPP+ technical team and are excited to see the ongoing success of the application as it continues to expand.”

International Code Council to Support Canine Companions with Mission of Providing Independence for People with Disabilities

Washington, D.C. – The International Code Council has committed to donating a portion of the proceeds from sales of its ICC/ANSI A117.1 standard for accessibility to Canine Companions, a non-profit organization that trains and donates service dogs to people with disabilities. The two organizations signed an agreement during a brief ceremony on April 24, 2022, at Chicago’s Navy Pier. The agreement will be used as a starting point for the Code Council and Canine Companions to work together to raise awareness around accessibility in the built environment.

“We are delighted to have the Code Council’s support in placing more service and facility dogs with people who need them,” said Matt Levering, Senior Development Director for Canine Companions, “Given its focus on safety and accessibility, our partnership with the Code Council is a natural fit.”

Canine Companions is the largest provider of service dogs in the world and has championed independence for people with disabilities since its founding in 1975. The organization has placed more than 5,000 assistance dogs for people with disabilities, including wounded veterans, entirely for free.

The ICC/ANSI A117.1 standard allows those with a physical disability to independently access, enter, and use a site, facility, or building. The specifications in the standard make sites, facilities, and buildings accessible to and usable by people with such disabilities as the inability to walk, difficulty walking, reliance on walking aids, blindness and visual impairment, deafness and hearing impairment, incoordination, reaching and manipulation disabilities, lack of stamina, difficulty in interpreting and reaching to sensory information, and extremes in physical size.

“Modern building codes and standards are at the core of improving accessibility for all people, so this partnership is important to us,” said Mark Johnson, Executive Vice President & Director of Business Development, “We are committed to finding innovative ways to work together to advance accessibility in the built environment.”
